Geek out: Tonari no Seki Kun (Anime)

For those of us who have spent years in the classroom. Trying to entertain ourselves while the teacher drones on. And also for those of us who were often distracted by our neighbors during class. This anime is a wonderful and humorous representation of these times.

Seki and Yumi sit next to each other in class. Yuki is a serious and slightly goody goody student who tries to listen to the teacher. Seki is the imaginative and honestly quite talented boy who sits next to her. Yuki is constantly distracted by Seki throughout the series and he often draws Yuki into his hijinks, usually resulting in her getting into trouble.

My favorite episodes are the ones where Seki plays modified versions of Shogi and Go (two very traditional games from the eastern part of the world). His imagination and social commentary (all without saying a word), draw you in and enrapture you.

As the series progresses we see Yuki and Seki grow a bit closer and Yuki seems to give up on trying to change him. I would like to call for a reboot of this show and if there is not enough material, more of the manga as well. Perhaps someday they will reboot it. Maybe one day we could see Yuki and Seki in middle school or even college.
